Shop and Cafe
Our shop and Polkadot Cafe are situated at the old pilchard factory, right on the beach-front. Roll up, get what you want and relax at our picnic tables overlooking the bay. If you are staying in our caravans or are on one of our watersports courses, you can run a tab, which saves you having to take cash to the beach.
We have all you need for a day on the beach: buckets-and-spades, fishing nets, crab-lines, sun cream, sun hats, sun glasses, swimming costumes, towels, body boards, snorkels, flippers and inflatables. If you buy an inflatable, we will even inflate it for you to save anyone passing out from the effort!
We also stock quality wetsuits, long and short, for adults and children from local companies such as Gul and Two Bare Feet. We sell outdoor clothing, T-shirts, fleeces, kagoules and our very popular own-design, Polkerris hoodies.
In 2013, we are once again stocking Nalu beads - the original collectible surf bead – which proved very popular last year. Equally popular are the very colourful Shmangle blankets, ideal for keeping you warm or to lie on the beach.
To save you lugging stuff from the car, we rent sun-loungers, wind breaks and other kit from the hut on the beach and, in high season, we offer newspapers and sell a small selection of second-hand books in aid of the RNLI.
The Polkadot Cafe is the place to get an award-winning Treleavens ice-cream, which is made nearby in Looe. For a hot drink we offer Fairtrade tea and coffee, and our Polkadot hot chocolate specials prove very popular with our watersports customers. We also offer a range of cold drinks and organic cordials.
The Polkadot policy is to source local food and drink: all of our food and drink suppliers are based in Cornwall. For example, we offer top quality Cornish pasties (steak or vegetarian), sausage rolls and, sometimes, bacon baps with bacon from the award-winning Tywardreath butchers. Generous portions of chips never fail to revive hungry beach-goers.
Many of our cakes are home made in Fowey, including Victoria sponge, chocolate brownies and our sought after Polkadot cup-cakes. Yummy!!
When inspected in August 2012, the Polkadot Cafe was awarded a Food Hygiene Rating of 5, 'Very good'.
In addition to our own facilities, there's also the Rashleigh Inn which does good beer and good food, right next to the beach (and is listed in the Times Online top 10 pub gardens for 2011) and 'Sam's on the Beach' which serves top quality seafood and pizzas.
