Cornwall Tourism AwardWe are passionate about our watersports. It's what we do. We can provide personalised tuition because we are a small centre focused on the individual, rather than on coach-loads of people. Polkerris is an excellent place to develop your skills if you have learned the basics inland because it is relatively sheltered yet, unlike estuaries, it does not have powerful tides and lots of traffic to worry about. We are an RYA Recognised Training Centre: your assurance that we are equipped and managed to provide you with a high quality, safe experience. All of our sailing and windsurfing courses are delivered by qualified instructors with safety boats on hand at all times.

Our taster sessions for beginners provide a fun introduction to the sports with the minimum of formality and the maximum time on the water. Our courses provide comprehensive tuition at each level, remembering always that it's your precious free time! We also offer supervised windsurfing and sailing sessions without instruction but with the reassurance of safety cover.

In 2013, we won the gold award for 'Tourism Activity, Sport & Experience of the Year' at the Cornwall Tourism Awards, having previously won two silvers. These were all awarded for the quality of our taster sessions.

All of our equipment is available for hire. Sailing and windsurfing hire requires that you can demonstrate your ability at Level 2 (sailing) or Intermediate Non-planing (windsurfing).

Our centre is located right on the beach and is equipped with changing rooms with showers and toilets. All of our watersports prices can be found in our current price list (pdf file).

Windsurfing is one of the most exhilarating watersports. It is challenging and fun, with the minimum of complexity and instant feedback for your efforts. With our modern equipment and the right tuition, you can progress rapidly. If you tried the sport years ago, finding it hard and the equipment heavy then think again – you will be amazed how much easier it is now.

Children love windsurfing because it is so hands-on with little formal learning – no rules, no technical stuff, just get on and go. We have tiny sails ideal for 8-year olds and above. We have been directly involved in developing the new junior windsurfing scheme and are very enthusiastic about delivering it!

All of our kit is top quality, modern equipment such as Starboard boards (Futuras, Kodes) and Tushingham sails. Full details of our courses are on the Windsurfing Courses page.

Many people new to sailing say to us what an extraordinary experience it is to be ‘driving’ a boat on the open sea with just the wind to power them along! People whose daily work involves lashings of detail and precision love the freedom and responsiveness that a sailing dinghy provides in such an accessible way. Dinghies are small, easy to handle and generally light to launch and transport. Learn to sail on your own in a single handed boat or with a crew.

Sailing fires children’s imagination and once they gain some confidence they will be chasing one another around and playing at being pirates, while learning a skill that develops their self esteem almost without realising it.

Our boats are new Laser Picos and an RS QBa, renowned for being easy and fun to sail for everyone from child to adult. We also have Wayfarers for groups and those who would rather not get completely wet! Full details of our courses are on the Sailing Courses page.

Professional tuition is increasingly seen as essential for safe powerboating. RYA Level 2 is an intensive course which provides a thorough introduction to boat handling skills. The 2-day course will cover low and high speed handling skills, launching and recovery, and theory. No previous experience is required. We also offer the RYA Safety boat course which introduces you to techniques for supporting and recovering other craft, particularly windsurfers and dinghies. Assessment-only is available for experienced boat drivers who need a certificate.

Our centre-console 4.8m RIB, brand new in 2012, is used for courses, along with a Zodiac inflatable with tiller steer, to provide experience of different types of boat and boat controls.

Stand-Up Paddle Surf

Stand-Up Paddle Surf (SUP)

The latest surfing-related sport to sweep the globe, SUP is an excellent way to get on the water and cruise around or pick up rolling swells in a way that you never can on a conventional surf board. We offer a 1 hour course which will see you up and paddling – then it’s just a matter of practice to develop your skills, confidence and fitness. Compare that with the hours of rinsing you have to endure to get good at surfing!

Polkerris is a good location for SUP because it is easy to launch and there are frequently small, rolling swells formed by the very gently shelving sea bed.

Sit-on Kayak

Sit-on kayak

Hop on and away you go! The rocky cliffs and sandy coves between Polkerris and Par are ideal for cruising around in our easy-to-use 1 or 2 person sit-on kayaks. We do not offer kayak tuition but we will help to get you launched and paddling in no time.

We also stock the very popular RTM kayaks for sale - so you can try before you buy. Take one away today!

We can provide vouchers for any of our sailing, windsurfing or other watersports activities. Tell us who it’s for, what they would like to do and how much you want to spend and we will provide a gift voucher for their birthday or other special occasion. Here are some ideas:

  • Kayak rental
  • 3-hour multi-sport taster session
  • Windsurf taster
  • 2-day ‘Start sailing’ course

All of our watersports prices can be found in our current price list (pdf file).

All of our equipment is available for rental. We brief you on the safe use of the equipment, provide buoyancy aids and point out the area of water that you can use. For boat and windsurfer hire, you must be competent to Level 2 (sailing) or Intermediate non-Planing (windsurfing).
